UC San Diego Health is conducting a quality improvement (QI) project to explore how Ambient AI scribing tools can improve physician workflow and wellbeing. These AI tools assist physicians by automatically transcribing patient interactions into electronic health record (EHR) notes. The goal is to reduce the time physicians spend on documentation, allowing them more time to focus on direct patient care and potentially reducing the burnout caused by excessive paperwork.
The project will test a HIPAA-compliant AI tool called Nuance's Dragon Ambient eXperience (DAX) Copilot. Physicians will be randomly assigned to use the AI tool or continue with their usual documentation process. Midway through the pilot, physicians will switch to the other group, so they will experience both the AI tool and the usual documentation process. The project will evaluate several factors:
Time Efficiency: How much the AI tool reduces time spent on documentation and EHR tasks.
Physician Wellbeing: Whether using the AI tool helps reduce physician burnout and fatigue.
Patient Experience: Whether patients have a better experience with physicians using the AI tool, measured through routine surveys.
Through this project, UC San Diego Health aims to gather valuable data to help healthcare leaders make informed decisions about adopting AI-driven documentation tools.
