Reflective Dialogue

Project Overview

Primary care clinicians, such as family medicine and general internal medicine physicians, are often the first point of contact for individuals seeking help with mental health concerns. The Reflective Dialogue project is designed to enhance the capabilities of primary care clinicians—such as family medicine and general internal medicine physicians—in addressing mental health concerns by integrating the principles of Open Dialogue into their practice. Originating in Finland in the 1980s, Open Dialogue is a network-based approach that emphasizes immediate intervention, inclusivity of the patient's social network, flexibility, psychological continuity, and fostering a dialogic conversation that tolerates uncertainty.

By training clinicians in these principles, the project aims to cultivate collaborative partnerships between healthcare professionals and the individuals they serve. This initiative addresses the shortage of expert Open Dialogue trainers and seeks to make this approach more accessible within primary care settings.
