Welcome to the UC San Diego Family

Message From Our Chief Residents

Thank you for taking the time to get to know us! Our curriculum offers a strong balance of both academic and community medicine. Throughout our training here, we work with an amazing group of passionate faculty and co-residents in a fantastic climate and diverse city.

Our training takes us into communities across San Diego—from the Mexico-US border to North and East County—where we work with local high schools and universities, community clinics, and UCSD's School of Medicine Free Clinics. We also have the unique opportunity to serve in free clinics across the border in Tijuana! On the inpatient side, our training includes a dedicated family medicine service, along with rotations at UCSD’s Hillcrest and La Jolla hospital campuses, the San Diego VA Medical Center, and Rady Children’s Hospital. We rotate through a variety of specialties, learning directly from expert faculty across multiple fields. We have a strong collaboration between UCSD residency programs and local health systems, exposing us to diverse patient populations. Training in these different settings equips us with a comprehensive understanding of how various care systems function, ensuring we gain the full breadth of family medicine.

Over the course of our three years, you will build a continuity panel at one of UCSD’s primary care clinics in Hillcrest, La Jolla, or Scripps Ranch - each with its own unique character and patient population. Our Hillcrest location, Lewis, offers care to a large underserved urban community, often Spanish-speaking; our La Jolla location, Genesee, serves a mix of kids, young professionals, and retirees; and Scripps Ranch provides care for many diverse multigenerational households. Our program offers areas of concentration in Sports Medicine, Advanced Procedures, Integrative Medicine, Lifestyle Medicine, and Women's Health for residents wishing to pursue further interests in these aspects of family medicine.

Beyond our full-spectrum training, one of our greatest strengths is the diverse and supportive community we share among residents and faculty. We come from all over the country and even from different parts of the world - not just California! - bringing unique backgrounds and lived experiences to our program. This diversity enriches our program, fostering a culture of inclusiveness, transparency, and strong resident advocacy. We have a growing diversity curriculum and a strong commitment to supporting resident wellness. Our resident-run Wellness Committee, Residency Advisory Committee, and Diversity & Anti-Racism Committee provide a platform for residents to initiate positive change for our program. Our residency program also has a strong presence in the Committee of Interns and Residents/Service Employee International Union (CIR/SEIU), which represents approximately 6,300 residents and fellows across the UC system.

We love training at UCSD! Our one-of-a-kind program empowers residents to pursue their individual interests and career goals. Over three years, you’ll be challenged, supported, and inspired while experiencing the full breadth of family medicine and building lifelong connections with the people and places of San Diego. We hope you’ll join our phenomenal community!
