About UC San Diego Sports Medicine Fellowship Program
Training Tomorrow's Experts in Sports Medicine
San Diego is home to a number of professional sporting teams and Division I and II colleges, as well as the Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista. Our program goal is to provide training in the development of the clinical competencies needed to diagnose and manage medical illnesses and injuries related to sport and exercise. We provide ample experience functioning as a team physician and in the promotion of physical fitness and lifestyles.
Our Mission
- To provide educational experiences for the fellow to develop clinical competence in the overall field of sports medicine.
- To provide for the development of the basic knowledge content of sports medicine as it relates to primary care medicine.
- To assist fellows in understanding the role of exercise in health promotion and to be able to prescribe an individualized exercise program for each patient.
- To emphasize injury prevention, management, and rehabilitation of common exercise and sports related acute and chronic injuries
Program History
Started in 1991, our program is one of the oldest primary care sports medicine fellowships in the nation.
